Wedding Photography - What to look for.

1. Light. Special photography has that indefinable glow. Look for contour in facial expressions, glow around head and shoulders. Too many photographers use flash head lighting indiscriminately, blasting the contour and light from the image from the moment the shutter is activated. Beware of the 'flat face' The camera is probably on 'auto' - you shouldn't be paying a professional to take your shots on auto pilot.

2. Framing. Look through folios carefully. After making sure that lighting is being properly conveyed, check the photographers' framing. An image should look 'right' too you. Try and get a feel for the balance of the image and ascertain if it is appealing to your eye. Beware of the 'illustrative' photographer. the one that puts you in a backlit archway, or dwarves you under a large structure or building. There is a very great difference between architectural and commercial photographers compared to portrait photographers. Make sure that images that you see capture emotion, light and successful framing.

photojournalism3. Value. This is where things get potentially dangerous. There are two types of photography company - the ones that offer value for your money, and the one's that are only interested in the bottom line - at a direct cost to your back pocket. Photography is one of those industries where most expensive is not neccessarily best. Look for photographers that will offer what you pay for as a part of your package - like: high resolution images supplied on CD Rom for digital packages,   included prints (some photographers charge $40 per print if you want more than the package includes), time spent on the day, or any other value added inclusions.
